Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Uganda · South-western Uganda

Mountain gorilla resting in the dense forest of Bwindi, Uganda

Introduction & Overview

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population, spread across several habituated family groups tracked daily by park rangers. The forest itself is ancient and dense - the name isn't an exaggeration - with steep, uneven terrain that makes every trek here feel genuinely earned.

Things to Do

  • Guided mountain gorilla trekking

  • Multi-day gorilla habituation experience (extended time with a not-yet-fully-habituated family)

  • Batwa cultural walks with a local community guide

  • Forest bird walks

Best Time to Visit

Bwindi can be visited year-round since trekking happens regardless of season, though the two drier windows (June-August and December-February) mean less mud on the trekking trails. Wetter months still offer good trekking - the terrain is simply more demanding underfoot.

How to Get There

By road from Kampala or Entebbe, it's a long drive of around 8-9 hours, often broken up with an overnight stop. Scheduled light-aircraft flights connect Entebbe or Kajjansi to airstrips near Bwindi in about 1-1.5 hours, which most visitors prefer given the road distance.

Accommodation

A range of lodges sit just outside the park boundary, from mid-range to luxury, most within a short drive of the trailheads.

Travel Information

  • A gorilla trekking permit is required and limited in number per family per day - book well ahead, especially for June-September and December-February

  • A porter can be hired locally to help carry gear and offer a hand on steep sections - a good idea for most trekkers

  • Malaria risk area
