Kibale Forest

Uganda · Western Uganda

Lush forest landscape in western Uganda near Kibale Forest

Introduction & Overview

Kibale Forest holds one of the highest densities of primates in Africa, and is best known for chimpanzee tracking - with sighting rates generally more reliable than gorilla trekking, since the forest terrain here is gentler and the chimp troops are well habituated to visitors.

Things to Do

  • Guided chimpanzee tracking

  • Chimpanzee habituation experience (a longer, more immersive full-day option)

Best Time to Visit

Chimpanzee tracking runs year-round. The two drier windows (June-August and December-February) make for easier underfoot conditions, though sightings themselves aren't strongly seasonal.

How to Get There

By road from Kampala or Entebbe, around 5-6 hours. Kibale is also a natural stop between Queen Elizabeth National Park and Uganda's other western parks on a longer circuit.

Accommodation

A number of mid-range and luxury lodges sit close to the park, several with forest-edge settings.

Travel Information

  • A chimpanzee tracking permit is required, generally more available than gorilla permits

  • Malaria risk area

  • Often combined with Queen Elizabeth National Park given its location on the same western circuit
