Lake Bunyonyi sits in a landscape of terraced, green-carpeted hills dotted with around 29 small islands. Unlike most East African lakes, it's free of bilharzia and crocodiles, making it one of the few genuinely safe-swimming lakes in the region - a calm, scenic place to unwind, often paired with a Bwindi gorilla trek nearby.
Canoeing between the lake's small islands
Swimming (safe due to the absence of bilharzia and crocodiles)
Nature walks through the surrounding terraced hills
Visiting local island communities
Visitable year-round, since activities here aren't wildlife-viewing dependent. Drier months make for more comfortable walking on the surrounding hillsides.
A short drive (around 1.5-2 hours) from the Bwindi area, making it a natural add-on either before or after gorilla trekking.
A range of lakeside lodges and guesthouses, several on their own small islands.
A relaxed, low-key stop rather than a wildlife destination in its own right
A good place to properly rest after the physical demands of gorilla trekking
No malaria risk directly on the lake's cooler highland shores, though surrounding lower areas may carry some risk - check current guidance
