Lion resting in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Introduction & Overview

Queen Elizabeth National Park spans savannah, wetlands and crater lakes, and is best known for two things: the Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George with one of the densest hippo populations anywhere, and the Ishasha sector's tree-climbing lions - an unusual behaviour not fully explained even by researchers.

Things to Do

  • Game drives across the savannah sections

  • Kazinga Channel boat cruise

  • Ishasha sector game drives for tree-climbing lions

  • Chimpanzee tracking in the nearby Kyambura Gorge

Best Time to Visit

Visitable year-round. The dry seasons (roughly June-September and January-February) concentrate wildlife near remaining water sources and make for easier game viewing.

How to Get There

By road from Kampala or Entebbe, around 5-6 hours, or a scheduled flight to one of the park's airstrips in around 1-1.5 hours.

Accommodation

Lodges and tented camps both within and just outside the park, several overlooking the Kazinga Channel.

Travel Information

  • The Ishasha sector sits some distance from the main park area, so a visit there usually adds a half or full day

  • Malaria risk area

  • A good pairing with Kibale Forest or Bwindi on a western Uganda circuit
